# Segment capabilities

The segments list, the actions available on a segment, and the four alerts the platform raises on your segments.

## What this page is for

Once a segment exists, the platform gives you a set of capabilities on top of it: figures, dashboards, comparisons, exports, labels, and alerts. This page covers the segments list and the alerts; the individual capabilities have their own pages.

## The segments list

**Audience > Segments** is where you view and manage your segments. Click **Edit view** to choose the columns you see.

{% columns %}
{% column %}

### Default columns

* **Type.** The [segment type](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types.md).
* **Name**
* **Creation date**
* **UserPoint.** The number of users in the segment.
  {% endcolumn %}

{% column %}

### Optional columns

* **Id**
* **Technical name**
* **User Accounts.** Users in the segment having a user account.
* **Emails.** Users in the segment having an email hash.
* **Cookies.** Users in the segment having a cookie.
  {% endcolumn %}
  {% endcolumns %}

Changes to your list view - filters, visible columns - apply only to you, and are kept for your next visit.

### Searching and filtering

Search by name or id in the search bar, or click **Filter** to filter by:

* Segment type. See [Segment types](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types.md).
* Segment [labels](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/labels.md).
* Whether the segment is persisted.
* Segment creation date.

Click **Export stats** to export the statistics of the segments in the current view.

## Available actions on a segment

The actions sit at the top right of the segment page.

<table data-search="false"><thead><tr><th width="230">Action</th><th>What it does</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Edit</strong></td><td>Reopens the segment in whatever produced it. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types/query-segment.md#editing-one">Query segment</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Create Lookalike</strong></td><td>Launches the lookalike creation wizard. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types/cohort-lookalike-segment.md">Cohort lookalike segment</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Create Overlap Analysis</strong></td><td>Compares this segment against the segments sharing the most users with it. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/overlap.md">Overlap</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>New feed</strong></td><td>Sends the segment to a partner platform. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/activate-your-audiences/send-your-audience-to-a-destination/send-your-first-party-data-to-a-destination.md">Send your first-party data to a destination</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Export</strong></td><td>Exports the identifiers attached to the segment. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/export-segment-identifiers.md">Export segment identifiers</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Label</strong></td><td>Assigns a label to the segment. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/labels.md">Labels</a>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Create Experiment</strong></td><td>Splits the segment into test and control groups. See <a href="/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types/experiment-groups-segment.md">Experiment groups segment</a>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

The panels on the segment page itself - overview, metrics, comparison, feed card list, import status - are covered by [Segment metrics](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/segment-metrics.md), [Segment dashboard](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/segment-dashboard.md), [Compare segments](/audience-and-activation/analyze-your-data/compare-segments.md), [Send your first-party data to a destination](/audience-and-activation/activate-your-audiences/send-your-audience-to-a-destination/send-your-first-party-data-to-a-destination.md) and [File import segment](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-types/list-import-segment.md) respectively.

## Alerts

Alerts show you the segments that need your attention.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you do not fix an issue and close its alert, the platform increments a counter on that alert rather than raising a new one. That keeps a repeating problem from flooding you with duplicates.
{% endhint %}

### Segments that have a definition error

Usually the result of a schema change that left some segment queries incompatible. Fix those segments so they are usable, or delete them if you no longer need them.

{% hint style="info" %}
A single broken segment triggers repeated alerts, because the platform re-checks regularly whether the query has been fixed.
{% endhint %}

### Segments that had a volume drop

An alert is triggered each time a segment's volume drops by more than a threshold percentage; the current threshold is displayed in the interface. A volume drop may point at a problem in your channels, your ingestion pipeline, or your query.

Some segments are volatile by design. To stop those from alerting, use labels:

* **Blacklist** some segment [labels](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/labels.md) - only segments carrying none of the selected labels trigger volume drop alerts.
* **Whitelist** some labels - only segments carrying one of the selected labels trigger them.

### Segments that were not correctly activated

Initial loading errors come in four flavours:

| Error                                                   | Configurable?  |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | -------------- |
| The initial loading job did not end well | - |
| Too many records were not correctly synchronised | Yes, threshold |
| Initial loading did not start in the expected timeframe | Yes, timeframe |
| Initial loading is taking longer than expected | Yes, timeframe |

Thresholds and timeframes can be updated through the alerting API, or by your Account manager. The alert objects and their configuration are documented in the **Setup & Monitor** section, under *Set up alerts*.

### Segments that could not be computed

A technical or internal issue prevented computation. These segments are recalculated automatically in the following hours, and the alert closes on its own if the next attempt succeeds.

### Closing alerts

After checking or fixing a segment, close its alert so it disappears from **Navigator** for everyone in your organisation. Two ways:

* Select several alerts in the alerts list and click **Close selected alerts**.
* Close them one at a time, from the **Close alert** button on the segment's page or from the menu in the alerts list.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.mediarithmics.io/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
