# Labels

Free-form tags that make segments findable, and that drive volume drop alerting.

## What they are

**Labels** are free-form tags you attach to segments and campaigns. Their first purpose is simple: making the segment you are looking for easy to find in a long list.

Their second purpose is less obvious and more useful - they are the mechanism the platform gives you for governing [volume drop alerts](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities.md#segments-that-had-a-volume-drop). Segments that are volatile by design can be excluded from alerting by label, or alerting can be restricted to labelled segments only.

## Managing labels

Labels are managed at organisation level, in **Settings > Organisations > Labels**.

<table data-search="false"><thead><tr><th width="180">Action</th><th>How</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Create</strong></td><td>Click <strong>New Label</strong>, enter a name, click <strong>Save</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Edit</strong></td><td>Open the dropdown at the end of the label row, then <strong>Edit</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Archive</strong></td><td>Open the dropdown at the end of the label row, then <strong>Archive</strong>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
Archiving a label **erases it from the segments and campaigns carrying it**. Those segments and campaigns remain available - only the label is gone. If the label was driving a volume drop blacklist or whitelist, that rule stops applying to them.
{% endhint %}

## Assigning a label to a segment

On the segment page, use the **Label** box to select the label you want to assign. To remove it, click the **X** in the label.

Labels are also one of the filters available on the segments list. See [The segments list](/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities.md#the-segments-list).

Labels also filter which segments an overlap analysis displays. See [Overlap segments](/audience-and-activation/analyze-your-data/overlap-segments.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.mediarithmics.io/audience-and-activation/build-your-audiences/segment-reference/segment-capabilities/labels.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
